It's something that she had considered getting "better" about- more self-confidence, more willingness to make her own choices. But losing Akashi has made her want to lean back into it, because it's safer. If she loses Mayuzumi, she really will be alone again because while Mercury cares in his own way, he refuses to be any kind of support for her beyond physical. He flat-out said that if she questions her choice with Cinder and Salem, she needs to leave him out of it.
